Course description:

TASK

Urban and architectural elaboration of possible scenarios of urban transformation around the Old Town area of Dubrovnik

PROJECT SITE

The central area of Dubrovnik - around the Old Town, landscape of the fosse along the city walls and the surrounding contact areas

INCENTIVES

- The major tourist attractors sites are focused on a narrow area - the area of the Old Town which causes difficulties in everyday life of the entire urban agglomeration of Dubrovnik

- The study area includes sites of a large investor interest for the construction

- General public and experts relate with a special sensitivity to interventions in the valuable cultural heritage areas under UNESCO protection

- Conservation approach to city development is not sufficient and require to examine the possibilities of improving current models of protection by widening urban-contemporary architectural interventions

- Results of the International competition suggested the need for a comprehensive conception of the urban space transformation around the Old Town

- The procedure for Master Plan Amendments of Dubrovnik city, still in progress, could incorporate suggestions to improve the existing system of urban organization
