Course description:

For 65 years, Aspen Institute Seminars have challenged leaders from all sectors to think more deeply, listen more attentively, and develop the critical habits of judgment that contribute to humane decisions and a life well lived. Aspen Institute Seminars begin and end with questions rather than answers, because seasoned leaders know that the most difficult decisions depend upon the capacity to inquire and to see matters in a different light. Rather than presenting a specific formula for success, Aspen Institute Seminars are conducted as text-based dialogues in which a highly-trained facilitator guides participants through an exploration of fundamental personal and institutional values and their contemporary organizational applications. Aspen programs are highly interactive and depend upon all of the participants having read the material in advance and being willing to participate fully in the roundtable seminars. This short seminar begins with the assumption that leadership begins with self-leadership that the decisions we make are ultimately moral, not technical, and that business and political decisions must take account of some notion of what we think a good society is (or could be). To that end, this seminar considers the values—and tensions—that inform what it means to live and do business in a civil society. What are the fundamental values of a civil society? To what extent are the compatible with one another? How are our values changing in the face of globalization and migration?
