Course
description:
An open course will run from the 13th through the 16th, with discussions of the history of self-management, especially but not exclusively, within the former Yugoslavia, reports from many countries on its present expressions, such as worker cooperatives, and presentations on the ideas, practices, problems, and prospects of future self-management initiatives. Issues that may be raised include: 1. Contemporary Latin American experiences with forms of self-management; 2. Self-management, the solidarity economy, and the world social forum; 3. Actual or potential initiatives to broaden employee ownership and reduce inequality; 4. Self-management and nationalism; 5. Education for and in self-management; 6. Innovative self-management and globalization. A group excursion into Croatia is contemplated during this portion of the course.
On the 17th and 18th of April, a business meeting of the International Institute for Self-Management will consider the possibilities and potential resources for continuing its work, including future courses and conferences to be held and ways to reawaken self-managed energies both locally and across borders. Members of the IIS, as well as those sharing responsibility for the preceding open course, are invited to participate in this meeting; others are welcome to attend as observers.
